Qualitative versus quantitative methodology
Answer the following prompt in an essay of 2-3 double-spaced pages. Essays may be longer if you like, but a comprehensive answer should be a minimum of 2-3 pages. You should refer to course readings, videos, and/or lectures to illustrate your points. No additional sources are necessary, but you are free to use additional work if you would like. Include all works referenced or quoted in a works cited page. The exam is due in Dropbox by Saturday, 11/13, at 11:59pm (Tuesday class) and Sunday, 11/14 at 11:59pm (Thursday class). An enduring debate exists within the social sciences between proponents of qualitative versus quantitative research methods. Each camp believes its methodology is inherently better at understanding the social and political world.
What do you think are the greatest strengths and weaknesses of each methodology? Are there aspects of socio-political reality that one methodology can answer that the other cannot? Are there certain research questions better suited to one or the other? Do you believe one is always preferable?
