Research Paper Assignment

Your assignment:
For this assignment you will need to select an issue from modules 5 – 7. You will need to complete a research paper on the topic you select so be sure it is one that interests you.

It will be wise to research sample research papers and formatting outlines to obtain an idea of what a research paper looks like. It would also be best to start looking for research on the topic before finalizing which issue you will select for your paper to make sure you are able to find enough current reliable data.

A good research paper includes enough information on an issue without a biased approach. You will need to summarize the thoughts of the authors, as well as tie the essay back to other current research that you have found.

You will need to cite a minimum of three sources, in addition to your textbook. You should use the research you find to present the readers with a general idea or background on the issue, as well as to validate or disprove the writings in the text.

You should also present the advantages and disadvantages of the issue. Keep in mind, this is not a persuasive assignment so you will not need to pick one side and argue for it. You are simply informing your reader on the issue for this assignment.

You will not need to include an abstract but you will be required to include a cover page in APA format.

Limit your paper to 1500-1600 words. You must use APA style; use appropriate grammar and organizational elements to submit your analysis.

You must use a MINIMUM OF THREE outside sources in addition your textbook and cite in APA. Third person and short concise sentences are expected. (the outside sources can come from the internet but academic ones are preferred)

This research paper requires that you gather data published by experts in the field and present your findings in the form of a research paper.

Failure to do so will result in penalties because not giving credit to original authors can be considered a form of plagiarism.

Points regarding citing your sources and giving credit to original authors:

• If you do not have a reference page attached, your paper will not be accepted.

• If you have a reference page attached but ALL of the sources listed are not referenced in your paper at least one time, your paper will not be accepted.

• If you include a reference page but either do not utilize the number of sources required, or do not refer to all the sources on your reference page, there will be a minimum of a 20 pt penalty, or more, or your paper will possibly still not be accepted.

Explain the key benefits of international and global expansion for domestic businesses, providing specific examples and using supporting evidence.

Overview

Blogs, LinkedIn articles, and other online publications are channels of communication through which people can share their experience, perspectives, and expertise directly with readers and readers can respond via electronic comments.

While these electronic channels are usually not as credible as scholarly publications, they are a great way for readers to learn about new topics and for writers to share their insight and expertise with a virtual audience. They are also often supported with references to case studies, reports, and other research.

In this assignment, you will share your knowledge of what globalization is and why organizations consider global expansion by writing an article intended for a virtual, professional audience.

Prompt

Create an article that could be shared online that defines key terms, explains fundamental concepts, and shares relevant examples as to why domestic businesses should consider expansion into global markets.

The article should have a brief introduction that explains what readers will gain from the post, a body that provides content supported with textual evidence from the course resources, and a conclusion that summarizes key takeaways for the reader.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

Types of Business Environments:

Differentiate between domestic and international business environments by defining and providing key characteristics of each type, using supporting evidence.

Example Organizations:

How do differing cultural conceptions of health and illness shape the health care interactions between the Hmong community and the American health care providers?Explain

During the past few weeks of class, we explored various cultural conceptions of health and illness.

We identified how such conceptions have been influenced by the history of Western medicine (e.g., the emergence of the biomedical model, the emphasis on verifiability, the separation of the mind from the body in medicine as a result of Descartes’ notion of mind-bodydualism, the biopsychosocial model, etc.). We also discussed the idea that, over time, our society has become more “medicalized” (i.e., Zola’s writing about the medicalizing of society).

We discussed the factors that influence intercultural health communication interactions (i.e., source, message, and channel factors) as well as the ways in which gender, ethnicity, race, age, sexual identity, and socioeconomic status and other identity characteristics predispose certain populations to better or worse health and health care experiences (i.e., health disparities).

Central to our discussions about health, illness, and health care is an understanding that people who claim certain identities and/or experience certain illnesses and conditions are likely to encounter social stigma and bear the burden of the resultant prejudice and discrimination.

The purpose of this paper is to apply your understanding of these central themes. Your task is to read the select chapters (3 and 6) from Anne Fadiman’s (1997) book, The spirit catches you and you fall down: A Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures.

The selected chapters provide a brief overview of the Fadiman’s exploration of the Hmong community’s health care experiences in the Merced Community Medical Center (MCMM) in Central Valley, CA, during the early 1980s.

Although the book details the experiences of baby girl Lia Lee, whose family along with hundreds of other refugee families arrived in central CA after fleeing war-torn Laos, the author describes the conflicts between the Hmong community and their American health care providers in the American health care system.

Carefully read the select chapters and answer the following, using evidence from the texts to support your ideas.

1. How do differing cultural conceptions of health and illness shape the health care interactions between the Hmong community and the American health care providers?

2. How do the health care experiences described in these chapters illustrate the importance of source, message, and channel factors in health communication interactions at MCMM?

3. How might social stigma influence the Hmong community’s health care experiences and what are the possible consequences of such stigma?

4. What might help to improve the health care interactions between the Hmong community and American healthcare providers?

Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from COVID-19?

Response by Natalia Perez

Rashawn Ray’s article, “Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from Covid-19,” explains and demonstrates the causes of why black community is dying from Covid-19 in a higher rate than any other race. The main cause of these higher rates are health disparities which can be based on how communities are raised by.

In which I mean that the black community has “less” resources such as “healthy food options, green spaces, recreational facilities, lighting, and safety.” In addition, many black people do have jobs, such as Ray states, where they can be janitors, food services, bus drivers, retail stores, etc. The aftermath of when the lockdown started caused many of them to lose jobs and having to work through the pandemic to gain some money.

As read from Golash-Boza’s reading, institutional racism is a form of racism where there is any racial inequalities in any institution/organization. It can be shown/set through any political, educational, economical, health, and any more kind of institutions.

In Dr.Ray’s article, he states that criminalization is one of the causes of health disparities which can also be seen as an example of institutional racism. There is a huge imbalance in the criminal system in black communities. It is extremely horrible. Dr.Ray explains a situation where currently, during a pandemic, black men are “coincidentally” getting stopped because they look suspicious from wearing masks. There was even a case where a police officer started to cough on a black person just for their pleasure.

It has been seen many times where police are racially profiling a black person and being rude to them in any kind of way. The criminal system has been a disappointment to the black community as seen throughout the years.

When reading Dr.Ray’s article, the sentence that I think summarized the article was when he stated, “I argue structural conditions that inform pre-existing conditions and health disparities are the main culprit for the epidemic within the pandemic which is ravaging Black communities across the U.S.”

He explains the cause in why the Black community is dying which is all these health disparities because of race and how the different communities are brought up. Because of all these differences such as resources and the health inequalities, it is causing the death rates from Covid-19 in the black community to be so high.

Covid-19 caused a worldwide lockdown which sadly took away jobs that caused chaos in the working class and lower class because it was their source of income. Many of these people are parents or have a family in which they are part of the family’s source of money.

Now, many of these people are having hard times to pay rent or even pay for groceries. Thankfully some of these people got stimulus checks but for some it was not enough to pay for simple things. Many people even got to the point of being close to homelessness because they had no money to pay rent. On the other hand, there are still some people who thankfully still have a job but they had to go through the dangers from Covid-19.

They never knew if they would get Covid or not but they had to get through to have some money as support for themselves or families. Although, compared to wealth people, I would think they had it easier because many would have money saved and still have their jobs and would work from home which is a different complete story for the lower class.

In my experience, as someone who is part of the working-class or lower middle class, Covid-19 has had a huge impact in our family. Although we were not left jobless, my parents are working more than usual (overtime everyday). I was scared that my parents would get Covid-19 but they had to go to work to support the family because if they did not work, we would sadly not be where we are now.

What evidence do you see that both Vivian Bearing and her healthcare providers have been socialized to use the Voice of the Lifeworld and/or the Voice of Medicine?

The story of an English professor, Vivian Bearing, who is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer.

The purpose of this paper is to apply your understanding of these topics to the movie Wit (2001), which features The story of an English professor, Vivian Bearing, who is diagnosed with Terminal ovarian cancer. Bearing describes her experiences as a cancer patient and offers her reactions to various health communication interactions during her diagnosis and treatment.

Carefully watch the movie and answer the following questions, using evidence from the texts to support your ideas

1. How does Vivian Bearing’s experience of social support influence her illness experience?

2. How do Vivian Bearing’s experiences with health care providers support the well-documented trends in patient-provider communication (e.g., physician-centered communication, asymmetrical versus transactional communication, etc.)?

3. What evidence do you see that both Vivian Bearing and her healthcare providers have been socialized to use the Voice of the Lifeworld and/or the Voice of Medicine? Does anyone in the movie deviate from the patient and/or health care provider role expectations and if so, how?

4. How does Vivian Bearing’s experience support Nuland’s ideas about how our cultural conceptions surrounding the “beautiful death” cause so many people to die alone?

Greed is Good: The Ethical Appeals of Gordon Gekko

Identify any remarks that make either of the two forms of Ethical Appeal discussed above. Does this speaker establish his practical wisdom, his commitment to principles, and his sense of Altruism?

If so, what does he say to make these qualities apparent?

Does he appear to take account of the values, desires, fears, or prejudices of his particular audience?

Explain how exactly he does that. Make sure you discuss both forms of ethos in your Journal Assignment.

Gordon Gekko’s “Greed is Good” Speech From Wall Street

Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is a thoroughly corrupt stock market profiteer. He illegally uses insider information and he uses his influence to sabotage various corporations – all in order to take the risk out of his investment schemes. And in his capacity as majority shareholder of Teldar Paper, he is able to manipulate the company in a way that will virtually guarantee that he will make a modest profit.

In this speech, he addresses the other shareholders at their annual meeting where they will vote on any proposed changes to the company. Gekko displays his Rhetorical chops as he discredits the management of the Teldar Paper Corporation in an effort to get the shareholders to fire them. Gekko argues that such a change in high-level personnel will help the failing company to recover and begin to turn a profit. But in reality, this is the last thing in the world that Gekko wants.

He was able to buy a controlling interest in the company relatively cheaply because it was failing. But he never planned to make it succeed. Instead, he plans to drive the company even further into failure so that it will be forced to shut down. At that point, Gekko plans to break it up and sell off the different divisions of it to other companies. Eliminating the experienced leadership from the company will ultimately hurt it, which is exactly what Gekko really wants. He’s willing to betray the interests of all the other shareholders and all of the employees of Teldar Paper in order to get what he wants.

How interesting that such a thoroughly unethical character manages to deploy brilliantly effective ethical appeals in his rhetoric!

Gekko:

Well,  appreciate the opportunity you’re giving me, Mr. Cromwell, as the single largest shareholder in Teldar Paper, to speak.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we’re not here to indulge in fantasy, but in political and economic reality. America, America has become a second-rate power. Its trade deficit and its fiscal deficit are at nightmare proportions. Now, in the days of the free market, when our country was a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder. The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this great industrial empire, made sure of it because it was their money at stake.

Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, these men sitting up here [Teldar management] own less than 3 percent of the
company. And where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary? Not in Teldar stock; he owns less than 1 percent. You own the company. That’s right — you, the stockholder. And you are all being royally screwed over by these, these bureaucrats, with their steak lunches, their hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets and golden parachutes.

Cromwell (CEO of Teldar Paper):Gekko

Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents, each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and still can’t figure it out.

One thing do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, andbet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents.

The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars.

[The audience of shareholders applauds enthusiastically]

Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms — greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge — has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed — you mark my words — will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.
