Is being clear is an effective communication strategy?
Concepts we explored in class today was the difference between a review of literature and a literature review.
Your Activity Points this week is for a take-home assignment (rather than in-class work) that requires you to conduct a review of literature and prepare annotated bibliography of 5 articles that are strongly related to your research project.
[150-350 words per article]
Your annotated bibliography must answer the following questions for each of the 5 articles, – How is the study relevant to your current work?
What methods were used to test the variables in your area of interest?
Which arguments and ideas were raised?
What were the findings of the study?
Follow the language and style of scholarly writing used in the articles; each bibliographic note should be titled with the APA style citation of the article; completed works will receive full points, incomplete- half points, and undone, no points.

Week 6 discussion question file
Read the three-page article titled The Body Rituals of the Nacirema. As you read it imagine that you are about to enter this culture (that does actually exist) and answer the following 2 questions:
1. What is the most “shocking” part about this culture to you?
2. Given the words used to describe this culture, what assumptions might you make about this culture? What do you think the people who identify with this culture are like? And what specific words or phrases lead you to make these assumptions?
Optional: Any guesses as to which culture is being described in this article?
Part 2
1. Pick one concept from this week’s lecture notes that stood out to you and explain why.
2. Pick one concept from this week’s assigned textbook reading that stood out to you and explain why. Be specific and feel free to include quotes.
Part 2 should be at least a solid paragraph. Also feel free to pose questions to the class that relate to the concepts you chose.
Are we headed for a future in which morality is thrown out the window, with every consumer’s AV working to protect their passengers’ interests regardless of who outside the car is hurt?
Should consumers be given an “ethical knob” ([10]; [24]) to dial in the moral settings of how their AV should respond in life-and-death situations, especially if it is known that consumers tend to dial the knob to an antisocial rather than prosocial setting?
Write an annotated bibliography of 10 published works on organizational communication theory and research. You need to use academic journal publications for this assignment (no books, magazines, or popular media).
Use academic databases such as Google Scholar to find your articles. List each article separately using the APA (7th edition), and then write a 2-3 paragraph summary of that article.
In your summary of each article, include the following: (1) a review of the author’s study or analysis objectives, (2) an explanation of the theoretical approach or framework used for the study or written analysis, (3) an explanation of the methodology, research or writing approach used by the author, (4) a summary of the author’s major findings and conclusions, and (5) a critique on how well the author achieved his or her objectives and recommendations on what the author could have done better and what further study or analysis should be pursued in the future.
Length: 10 pages, double-spaced, 12-pt Times Roman font
Style Manual: APA, 7th edition
Additional Requirements
Review only academic articles (found in academic journals) or book chapters (found in edited academic books, NOT textbooks)
Write in APA academic style (use APA style academic journals as your example)
Pick a specific area of media and social influence research
Write clearly and succinctly using correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
Read CHAPTER 3 of the textbook: Analyzing Cultural Value Dimensions on pages 43-56. note that by me giving you only a few pages that you need to truly and deeply know and understand, will not be re-covering them in this lecture, expect you to ask any questions you have about the material, and will expect you to be able to identify, apply and give examples for this material assign.
discussion guideline – format: Think of this more as an essay or blog as opposed to a typical discussion post. usually include a suggested length in the discussion guidelines but in general, no less than 3 paragraphs should be written for each initial post. Make sure to address all sections and all prompts in your discussion post. And again remember, this is how am grading your learning and engagement with course material. Using short direct quotes from readings and/or videos, using class vocabulary and referencing class concepts will strengthen your post and your grade.

Week 5 discussion question file
This discussion will focus on meeting with your IB and talking about this week’s content with them. It will be fun and interesting (in my humble opinion – ha) to get to know everyone else’s IB and get to hear just a little bit about each of their experiences. You can explain concepts to them, you both could look through Hofstede’s country comparison website together (see lecture notes for details) or could even take some of the self-assessments found in Chapter 3 of your textbook. You can compare and contrast where you individually fall on the different dimensions and where the culture with which you identify falls.
For this post, pick at least 2 specific concepts from this week to discuss with your IB (or another person from a different culture if your IB is not available). Then in your discussion post, complete the following:
1. Tell us which country/culture your conversational partner was from
2. Tell us 2 of the concepts you discussed and how your partner/ their culture connects with each concept – you can also explain how you/your culture connects with each. Also provide at least 2 examples for each connection (e.g. high power distance because clan leaders make decisions for individual families). To clarify, there should be at least 4 specific examples explained in this section. Be specific and elaborate.
3. Provide at least 2 other insights that was brought to light through the discussion. It could be other interesting facts you learned about your IB/their culture that don’t directly relate to this week’s material, it could be questions that you now have that you are seeking answers to, it could be things you realized about yourself or your experiences through this meeting.
Review the Interpersonal Communication Skill Sets handout and identify your strongest (e.g., “non-verbal”) and weakest (e.g., “conflict management”) communication skill areas. These skill areas can be relevant to work, personal, or academic life. IDENTIFY these TWO areas in your response.
ILLUSTRATE your strong and weak areas with separate, detailed personal stories.
After sharing these stories, review the course syllabi, reading/assignment schedule, and reading material and CREATE a plan for improving your weak area.
Do the following in your plan:
DEFINE the outcomes clearly (what does it look like when you succeed?);
ARTICULATE realistic steps for improvement (these steps should be incremental);
ESTABLISH a timetable for reaching your goals (two months? three months? a semester?); and,
INCORPORATE course readings and/or video lecture material into your response as evidence of understanding and applying course concepts.
