The Movies, Realism Versus Fantasy
In your reaction to the reading (Post-Classical Hollywood : Film Industry, Style and Ideology since 1945, Chapter 7-8, and Twentieth Century-Fox : The Zanuck-Skouras Years, 1935-1965. Intro+ Chapters 1-2), consider any and discuss?

Conclude your discussion with your perspective on the role of film in American history and today. Be sure to incorporate at least one citations from each of the books.
Be aware that the paper should not exceed 600 words in proper APA style (not including title page and references). This means that you should seek to develop a discussion with a clear focus on the issues that you would like to address, and do so, with a clear voice that articulates your position.
The review should be concise and should integrate direct quotations from the text (no longer than one or two sentence quotes with formatted citations).
Be sure to provide your perspective in relation to the area of the debate that you chose to address. Give your work an original title that can represent the focus of your work.

How We Get News and Information Now
As you do the readings and watch the videos, think about what challenges and opportunities arise from the transformation in news gathering and reporting made possible by the internet and in the proliferation of easy access to information. After doing the readings and watching the videos, post to the discussion board about these transformations. Some thoughts to get you started:
Do you and your friends and family fit the models of news consumption described in the Pew articles? You may want to refer to some of the charts and graphs and cite some statistics from the articles to make your case.
Can limiting your reading to what is posted by like-minded friends on social media make you narrow-minded? How? You may need to cite specific articles and passages to make your case.
What have you learned about the uses of Wikipedia and its credibility as a source? [If you viewed the optional video on the “Metal Umlaut,” you can discuss that in your answer, too.]
Think about everyday access to an important newspaper like the Washington Post. Would you pay for it, or do you think all news should be free? Consider this: who is going to do the long-term research and investigative reporting that roots out corruption if all news is free and not done by professional journalists? [Hint: read the optional reading on investigative journalism for more about this topic.]

1-1 Discussion: Aligned Messaging
Find an example of an organization you feel has strong visual communication. Examine a few different visual communications that they have shared with the public, whether digitally or through print mediums. Then, address the following questions regarding your selected brand:
Who is the organization’s target audience?
What are the general goals of the communication the organization sends? For instance, are they meant to entertain, inform, or persuade?
Are the channels the organization uses to send its visual communication effective? Why or why not?
Is there clear consistency between the organization’s visual communication? If so, what are some of the recurring themes you see in the organization’s messages?
Discuss how American schools are set up to fully educate students from upper-class backgrounds and to give a limited education to students from lower-class backgrounds.

For this assignment, you will summarize and respond to the readings related to one of the social issues covered in weeks 2-4. Select one of the social issues covered. The possible issues are: language and power, freedom and security, and health and wealth. choose (Language and Power).

Organization
First present the 1-2 paragraph summary and the 1-2 paragraph response for your first reading selection. Then, present the 1-2 paragraph summary and the 1-2 paragraph response for your second reading selection.
Sources and Documentation
You are required to use two sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).
Since your sources are from assigned course readings, you do not need to include formal citations. However, you should demonstrate basic attribution. This means you should reference the article titles and authors in your summary-response. For example:
In the reading selection, “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” Jean Anyon discuss how American schools are set up to fully educate students from upper-class backgrounds and to give a limited education to students from lower-class backgrounds.
Format and Length
You should submit your summary-response for both readings in a single document/file.
Your paper should include a header consisting of your name and the assignment name and a title that reflects your specific essay focus. (See example below.)
Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 11 or 12-point font.
Your summary and response for each of the reading selections should be a minimum of two paragraphs (about 400-500 words) in length.
