Content Analysis for Cultural Competency

Educators are often tasked with selecting reading materials for students. These texts might be used in whole class, small group, or one-on-one instruction, or they might be used during independent reading time.

It is critical that educators are aware of the types of reading materials offered in their classroom to present students with a range of books and perspectives, as well as provide reading materials that are not heavily biased.

Select a piece of children’s literature, young adult literature, an informational article, or a textbook used in classrooms.

You can find the reading material or text in your own collection, at your local public library, or online as an e-book. Using the “Guide for Selecting Anti-Bias in Children’s Books,” evaluate the selected reading for bias.

In a 250-500 word matrix, conduct a text analysis using the article’s nine guidelines to identify bias in your selected material.

In your analysis, assess the degree to which surface culture and deep culture are addressed and the cultural values that are presented in the text. Additionally, explain how you applied each guideline to evaluate the text for bias in order to create more relevant learning experiences for all students.

Following the text analysis matrix, in 150-250 words, describe where you think the text falls on the cultural competence continuum (see Topic 3) and why. Reflect on what the text or analysis revealed about your own personal biases.

Include at least two resources to help deepen your own understanding of cultural, ethnic, gender, or learning differences.

Identify the action steps for competently and respectfully addressing student performance issues that may appear to be affected by individual and cultural differences.

Describe and explain how the four-stage process could be used by the Belmont Abbey leaders to improve the strategic planning process that enhances the chances of success for one of the college’s initiatives.

Create a PowerPoint presentation and corresponding script (or speaker’s notes) that consists of the following bolded components:

Summarize the case for your team. Provide a synopsis of the Belmont Abbey case that enables the intended audience to understand the case, including events, stakeholders, and challenges that will be analyzed.

Analyze the organizational disabilities and systems archetypes present in the case.

Explain and map at least one example of a systems archetype can be seen in the case. Include at least one systems map as part of your presentation.

Describe and explain how the four-stage process could be used by the Belmont Abbey leaders to improve the strategic planning process that enhances the chances of success for one of the college’s initiatives.

Explain how your set of questions would help uncover stakeholder assumptions and clarify steps needed for future progress. Refer to Stroh’s Thinking for Social Change text.

Propose an inquiry model to plan for next phase of organizational improvement.

Demonstrate and explain how an inquiry model such as ARPP/action research could be use by the college leadership to plan the next phase of improvement or change.

Provide a set of specific practical recommendations about how the president should proceed. Demonstrate how your recommendations align with the college’s mission, vision, and values.

Conclude with at least 3 discussion questions you would pose to help uncover team members’ assumptions and facilitate their inquiry into and understanding of the key concepts you have presented.

 

Describe how this controversial issue could affect your future teaching practices and how it could affect your future students.

Social Injustice and Cultural Identifiers Research Essay

Topic 2, as well as the feedback provided by your peers and your instructor on the rough draft you submitted in Topic 4.
In your research essay address the following:

Describe the cultural identifier and why you chose it. Explain your connection to your choice of cultural identifiers.

Summarize the key historical events that have significantly affected your specific cultural identifier.

CASE STUDY: RIVERBEND

Summarize the case. Provide a synopsis of the case study, focusing on how communication problems and cultural misunderstandings created conflict in the organization.

Apply the four learning organization disciplines to the case.

Using the lens of one or more of the four core disciplines (personal mastery, mental models, team learning, shared vision), provide an analysis of the extent to which the discipline(s) reveals organizational dynamics and contributes either to organizational learning or to the organization’s problems.

How could the four disciplines be fostered to have a more beneficial impact on the organization?
Apply a systems lens to the case.

Analyze the organizational disabilities and systems archetypes present in the case.

Recommend change management strategies for the organization based on the case.

Prior to suggesting change management strategies, use critical thinking tools to identify assumptions the stakeholders in the case may have made, and develop a set of questions you would ask to help the stakeholders uncover their assumptions and clarify the steps needed for future progress. Describe and explain how the four-stage process could be used by the Riverbend leadership to improve the strategic planning processes that enhance cultural understanding among stakeholders and the community. Refer to Stroh’s Thinking for Social Change text.

Provide a set of specific practical recommendations about how the CEO should proceed in the future in a way that furthers the goals of supporting increased cultural understanding among stakeholders and the community.
