What methodological approach provides a powerful lens for delineating social studies teachers as curricular-instructional gatekeepers? Why? How does your chosen methodological perspective and study design build on or extend previous work in this area?

Thornton (1991, 2005) and van Hover et al. (2010) have described social studies teachers as curricular-instructional gatekeepers who exercise some control over the topics and perspectives taught in classrooms.

Crocco and Livingston (2017) contended that “satisfactory gatekeeping,” for social studies teaching “depends on the elements” Shulman identified in his work on PCK (p. 367).

PCK, Shulman (1987) wrote, “represents the blending of content and pedagogy into an understanding of how particular topics, problems, or issues are organized, represented, and adapted to the diverse interests and abilities of learners, and presented for instruction” (p. 8).

Taking into account this work, what methodological approach provides a powerful lens for delineating social studies teachers as curricular-instructional gatekeepers? Why? How does your chosen methodological perspective and study design build on or extend previous work in this area?

Discuss the meaning of your observation for the child. Consider what kind of learner is this child and what might be the motivations for their behaviors and language based on your experiences and readings.

Focus Child Observation:Cognition and Sensory Development

Observations are documentation of direct (in-person or recorded) observations of young children in childcare settings, alternative out of home care including family childcare settings, special classes for young children or home settings for newborns and infants not enrolled in out of home care.

There will be 3-4 focus child observations engaged in various learning activities. If possible, you should choose a child you can visit for multiple in-person observations. The more distant the relationship the better. Your focus child observations will be the foundation for your final paper and newsletter.

Observation Format: Each observation should be 2-4 pages long, typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font only with 1-inch margins. Each page must be numbered with your last name and course number. Each observation should have a heading with the child’s name; age; date; time and location of the observation along with the following sections:

1) Context Description: you only need to describe your focus child once.

2) Observation: Describe what you see and hear as well as how children do what they do and say what they say; and

3) Interpretation: Discuss the meaning of your observation for the child. Consider what kind of learner is this child and what might be the motivations for their behaviors and language based on your experiences and readings.

Describe unique areas of consideration for supplementary aids and services that the IEP team should consider for students with physical disabilities or other health impairments and how the team can document it in the IEP.

Module 11: Chapter 14 Review Questions

Complete the following questions to demonstrate your knowledge of students with physical disabilities and other health impairments. Remember to include information from both the chapter reading, additional readings and instructional video(s). Submit your answer below.

1. Describe the typical characteristics of students with physical disabilities and describe a few examples of accommodations/modifications that would be beneficial to these students.

2. Describe the characteristics of students with epilepsy and how IEP teams can ensure that students with epilepsy’s medical needs are met.

3. Describe unique areas of consideration for supplementary aids and services that the IEP team should consider for students with physical disabilities or other health impairments and how the team can document it in the IEP.

Describe the two strategies AND any family characteristics (cultural or personal) that might be important to consider and why.

Transition plan part 3

PERSONAL BIASES (USE AS HEADING)

1. Describe your own positions, biases or “universal values”

2. Describe how these positions, biases, and values might impact the transition process

CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS OR CONCEPTS (USE AS HEADING)
1. List and describe one cultural expectation or concept from A Journey Not a Destination and

2. How you might address it to avoid a “transition pothole.” Check article for what this phrase means.
STRATEGIES (USE AS HEADING)

1. List and describe two strategies you can adopt to engage Angelica’s family in the transition process.

2. Describe the two strategies AND any family characteristics (cultural or personal) that might be important to consider and why. Pull these characteristics from the Family Systems Framework (in your textbook and the video module).

For example, interviewing the family at the start of the year might help you to (a) learn more about their background, values, and expectations for Angelica.

However, during the interview you would need to consider family communication styles (to know how to best ask and respond to questions), their roles (to understand who would be most appropriate to include in the interview), and their values (to determine if some questions/topics might not be appropriate to address.

Use of proper APA style, including citations (if any); use of proper grammar and spelling. 12-point font (Times New Roman), 1” margins, double-spaced, no more than 3 pages

Midterm Project

The MidTerm Project will be the creation of a Children BOOK of at least 10 pages. It should tell a story (fiction or nonfiction) and be both engaging to the student as a listener and exciting through its visual presentation.

Creativity is a vital part of this assignment It should be 12 X 17 or smaller but can be bound in various ways.

The book should support a particular skill or outcome and reflect incorporation of some of the various concepts and skills addressed during this course. The book should be purposeful as well as entertaining.

Midterm Project

The midterm consists of two components- a book and a rationale with reflection. An additional component is a video presentation of the book that is due to HW # 12 and will be graded separately.

Component 1: Will be the creation of a Children’s Book of at least 10 pages. It should tell a story and be both engaging to the student as a listener and exciting as a visual presentation. Creativity is a vital part of this assignment. The book should support a particular skill or learning outcome (Outcomes: 1-5, 9, 11-13)

Grading: This item will be graded holistically based on:

Ability to focus on a skill, topic or competency relevant to the Early Childhood curriculum and/or the preschool NGLS

Use of vocabulary, language and/or concepts that extend student knowledge

Visual appeal (eye to buy appeal) & Creativity

Demonstration of embedded course knowledge in the final product (book)

Presentation of book on video that will be graded separately (HW # 12)

Component 2: Children Book (Big Book is allowed for the presentation of the book in HW # 12) Rationale (min 3 pages double spaced Times New Roman)

Based on the course readings discuss:

The age and group this book was intended for and why

The elements that went into creating this book based on what you now know about early literacy (i.e. repetition, multiple perspectives etc.).

What was your focus (i.e., skill, topic or competency relevant to the Early Childhood curriculum and/or the preschool NGLS)
What standard your book meets and why

Why you choose the vocabulary, language and/or concepts that extend student knowledge

How would you use this book in your classroom

Support your discussion with research (3 references should be used at minimum).

Be sure to use APA formatting in your paper.

This paper/a commentary must include the following sections:

Title page.
Rationale.

The book itself (for the purpose of the paper, you can include the book in an MS word format on a regular letter-size format or use google slides if it is more convenient)

Conclusion – Based on this analysis and comments, you should make suggestions for the improvement of the project and recommendations for future classroom practices

There are three (3) minimum references requirements for the paper.

Appendices (if applicable) – Any additional materials, etc.

Successful teachers do the following:

develop and apply knowledge of varied learner needs
consider research and theory about how learners with varied needs are best supported to learn

develop learner knowledge and skills using individual education plan goals, common core and other learning standards, and ongoing assessment to select instructional objectives

provide individualized instruction and instructional and performance adaptations and accommodations that further learning
attend to generalization and maintenance of newly learned knowledge and skills

Reflect on and analyze evidence of the effects of instruction and other supports on individual learning, and use this information to inform future selection of instructional content and methods of instruction

Support student efforts of self-assessment and independent learning
Mechanics

The Children’s Book – Part 2 must be type-written and double-spaced, with the commentary of at least 3 pages total not including the title page and the reference page. American Psychological Association (APA) format must be followed for references and citations. At least three

references are required. refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (latest edition) printed by the APA. You can also refer to the APA Sheets in this Course Information section.

Remember that there is a minimum three (3) references requirement for the paper. These references (books, articles, etc.) should be published within the last five years. For grading the research paper, refer to the rubrics.

Your references in the paper should match the references on the Reference Page. If you have a source on the reference page that is not in the paper, this is an error.

Make sure that you follow the current version of the APA format. Your final paper should be double-spaced, printed in 12 font, using Times New Roman. do not leave an extra space between paragraphs.

Your Reference page is the last page. Put the word References on top and in the middle of the page. Do not underline or boldface it. It should also be double-spaced.

Do not enumerate your sources; rather arrange them in an alphabetical order. The first line is a regular line at the margin, the second and the rest are indented – a hanging indent. The next source, the same pattern.

The title of the book is italicized, not underlined.

The title of the journal is italicized, not underlined.

Everything (the paper and the reference page) is double-spaced.

When working on your paper, pay attention to the structure of your paper and to the use of the APA style, especially when you work with references.

It is very important to follow this requirement in order to get the highest grade. see a Sample Reference Page and APA Sheets in the Course Information folder.

While working on your final paper, refer to Rubrics for project in the syllabus.

Below  find some additional explanation to what your reflection should be about.  note, that you can include much more information into your final paper than it is indicated in this explanation.

Technical Requirements for the paper:

Papers must be typed on one side of standard-sized 8 x11 paper.

Title pages must include these elements: college; course title; section and instructor

Assignment title; author and date due

The typeface (font) should be a standard 12 Times New Roman .

Double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides.

All pages are to be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page.

Keep a copy of your paper.

Plagiarism and/or cheating will result in immediate failure of this course.

Choose a Literacy-based lesson appropriate for this age group – remembering that literacy in 3K and Prek may not look like direct teaching of letters but instead in promoting the underlying skills that support children’s later reading and writing:Discuss?

In this Assessment, we focus on the 3/4 YEAR OLD age range of preschool the topic of observation, documentation and assessment.

This project is grounded in the knowledge that observation is a primary mechanism for assessment in early childhood – yet it is not always carefully planned and documented as it could be.

The age group is 3/4 years old.

This should be for a general education class or an inclusion or ICT class (not a self-contained class). PreK should be a class of 15-18.

Then choose a Literacy-based lesson appropriate for this age group – remembering that literacy in 3K and Prek may not look like direct teaching of letters but instead in promoting the underlying skills that support children’s later reading and writing.

Use the NYS Early Learning Guidelines (https://www.earlychildhoodny.org/pdfs/Early_Learning_Guidlines-Revised-2020.pdf) and appropriate Prek standards (http://www.p12.nysed.gov/earlylearning/standards/documents/PK_Standards_Resource_Web_REVISED_2021.pdf) to help ensure you are creating a developmentally appropriate lesson.

Consider the templates in the module which are both lesson templates for preschool and documentation and assessment templates.

Then record a video sharing an overview of the lesson and detailing how you would plan for observation and documentation throughout the lesson. Upload the link to the video to the discussion.

Under the Assignment itself, submit an assessment and/or documentation tool that you would use (some are in the module that you may use or you can find another or create your own) to observe student learning and then provide a written rationale for this choice in addition to addressing it in your video.

Finally, fill out the Assessment Self-Assessment Tool (INCLUDED IN THE UPLOAD FILES BELOW) to analyze your approach to assessment and how you did/would provide feedback throughout the lesson.

Children should not be in the video – most videos will simply be of you in front of the camera with materials as needed. Post your video to the discussion 4 days before the due date so fellow candidates can view and offer feedback and comments

What instructional implications does this create? When and how would it be appropriate to use cognates as a support for the development of L2?

Exemplar Exercise

Write a 1,000-1,500 word essay discussing the relationship between proficiency in L1 and the ability to learn L2. Include a brief discussion of the stages of L1 acquisition in your essay for context. Your essay should address the following questions:

How can literacy in L1 support literacy in L2?

What instructional implications does this create?

When and how would it be appropriate to use cognates as a support for the development of L2?

Include 3-5 sources from your research to support your position.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

How do students handle these interactions? Are academic subjects dropped due to tensions between parents and students?

Recommendation

Recommendations for Homeschooling Studies It is time to expand homeschooling studies beyond the typical examinations of academic
achievement, student socialization, and parental motivation to homeschool. The findings from
this study introduced new avenues of inquiry that may be worth pursuing including
investigations into the emotionally-charged interactions between parents and students and the
lack of writing instruction among some homeschooling families. Based on these discoveries,
would recommend two future studies: First, believe a mixed method study of the emotionallycharged
interactions typical in the homeschool setting is warranted.

A broad survey could be given to 500+ participants asking about emotional interactions during academic instruction between parents and students (e.g., crying).

This survey could be followed up with a multiple case study examining these interactions.

Some questions to be addressed could include the following:

Are such interactions typical in the homeschool setting? How do parents handle these interactions?

How do students handle these interactions? Are academic subjects dropped due to tensions between parents and students?

Another valuable homeschooling study could revolve around why some parents do not teach writing.

For instance, the study could begin with a brief survey sent to 500+ homeschooling families asking how many homeschooling parents teach writing, how they teach

it, and with what frequency it is taught, followed up by a multiple case study of families who do
199 not teach writing.

Some questions to be addressed could include the following:

What reasons factor into an avoidance of teaching writing?

What is the writing self-efficacy of those students who have not been formally taught writing?

Explain why you found it interesting, and explain why it is useful to know about this concept/a piece of information. Mention something specific from the video.

First, read the document “Reading: “Assessment in Early Childhood Education” by Worthamand Hardin” and watch the following video entitled “Observing Young Children”

In your initial post address both of the questions below:

Description of a concept or a piece of information from the reading you found interesting. Explain why you found it interesting, and explain why it is useful to know about this concept/a piece of information. Mention something specific from the reading.

Description of a concept or a piece of information from the video you found interesting. Explain why you found it interesting, and explain why it is useful to know about this concept/a piece of information. Mention something specific from the video.

Remember that while your initial comment should be at least 400 words, you will probably need more than 400 words to successfully address what is asked above.
