Watch the undergraduate performance video and answer the following questions. How would you describe these performances? What was your favorite performance? Why? Is there anything you would like to see these students improve?
It is important to remember that this recital features performances by undergraduate students; often, the students are just learning to perform solo music in public. While it’s ok to point out things you liked or didn’t like, reply from a beginner’s perspective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXGl5yBm6Q&t=459s
We are focusing on the history of New York City (The Bronx) and Jamaica during this week. In that spirit, listen to the Fugees’ album "The Score" (1996). For your weekly reflection, we’d like you to write 300-380words that highlight two links that hear between hip-hop and reggae on the album.
How does the music highlight the historical connections or dynamic between the United States and the Caribbean, whether in terms of lyrics or sound/samples? Feel free to focus on specific songs; you do not have to write about the whole album. (Whosampled and Genius should be helpful in reviewing the album)
Reflection 3
What does Mitchell emphasize in the international reception of hip-hop? For your response, apply one example of international hip-hop in your own analysis – this can be an experience you had with hip-hop culture when living or traveling abroad, or listening to an artist from outside the USA, perhaps involving a collab with an American artist. How might Mitchell’s ideas apply to your example?
Reflection 1
Select a specific hip-hop artist or individual track that strongly interests you, and write a brief reflection exploring your example (300-380 words) Considering Murray Forman’s initial frame of hip-hop studies (see the slides from Week 1 Thursday), we’d like you to examine at least one of the themes we have looked at it in class and have it inform your discussion. To receive full credit, your reflection should go beyond fandom and focus on analysis; in other words, strive to explore both the cultural context and musical meaning.
Themes that we looked at in class consider
city
region
historical era
politics
Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you?

Watch this virtual concert h https://youtu.be/-XOVLlf-MPM
Then, in 2-3 page paper (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font), address the
following points:
Explain the details of the concert: who were the performers, was it live or
virtual, where/when, etc.
Utilizing the research tools that have introduced in this class, provide some
historical context for the music that was performed. This historical context
could include biographical information about one or more of the composers
featured during the concert, and/or a description of how the music you heard
fits into themes from classical music history as covered in lectures. The
expectation is that you cite at least one outside source.
Last but definitely not least, describe your personal impressions of the music
(likes, dislikes, new things learned) as well as what you thought of the
experience of ‘attending’ a virtual concert.
Discuss why you think The Four Seasons by Vivaldi is so famous, or “great”. When you discuss a particular spot in the music, cite exactly where (in the timing) you are talking about (e.g. “at 4:19, the cymbal crash is the loudest part…). You can talk about the structure of the music, the kind of instrumentation (if that is significant), WHY it has an impact, not just that it has an impact (in other words, don’t spend a lot of time talking about how it makes you “feel”). As much as possible, try to understand what is going on, and do your best to talk about it.
