You can speak in generalities (i.e. – the microsystems for the boys include their caregivers), but make sure it is specific to the film.

2.Select 2 of the 4 main characters in the film.

3.Through either a multidimensional OR life cycle perspective, discuss how each system interacts with these characters to inform their functioning and development.

Choose a topic. What is your chosen crime or violence issue? Choose from the following list and provide a brief preliminary overview. Your overview will simply be 1–2 sentences describing why this issue is important to you and to society in general.

Decriminalization of responsible drug

Intervention on the issue of campus

Prisons as mental health institutions

Militarization of police

Institutionalized racism in a chosen area
of the criminal justice system

Other issue (if approved by instructor)

The topic have chosen to research is the issue of prisons being used as mental institutions.

Ever since deinstitutionalization in the ’60s, which was well-intended but not properly followed through with, the rate of those incarcerated with severe mental illness has skyrocketed to where it was before asylums were utilized (St. John, 2016).

A majority of these offenders have co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders. With the implementation of proper behavioral treatment programs, the
numbers of those incarcerated with severe mental illness and the rate of
reoffending can be significantly decreased.

This issue is important to me as am working with the goal of improving the prevention and treatment of personality disorders. It is important to society because this treatment
would reduce crime, substance use, and re-offending.

2. Introduce your social advocacy group. This is an advocacy group of your own creation. In other words, if you were to establish an advocacy group dedicated to the work of your issue, what does that advocacy group look like and what are its ultimate goals (e.g., public awareness, political action, social action, changing laws)?

Explain the work the group does related to the topic area.

Explain how the social issue aligns with the group’s ultimate goals.

The social advocacy group would establish would consist of forensic
psychologists and social workers who are dedicated to the rehabilitation of
offenders with severe mental illness and substance use disorders.

This group would also advocate for the early intervention of substance use and
mental health disorders.

The kind of work this group would do includes,

Generating public support about the issue and raising awareness
about what kind of treatment programs and prevention methods
there are.

Enacting policies that change how prisons treat the mental health
of their offenders.

Increasing the use of data and analytics to predict who is at risk of
offending and re-offending.

Providing prevention methods and treatment options for those at
risk.

Foundational and Advanced Perspectives in Qualitative Methods

DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT

3000 word assignment, +/- 10% (excluding references)

Choose two research articles that we either discussed during the classes, or that are relevant for your research, or that you simply find interesting. Critically discuss and compare, across the two articles:

1. The paradigmatic foundations, OR the theoretical perspective, OR the interpretative stance (OR a combination of those, depending on how much details you can infer from the papers) that they adopt, reflecting upon the ontological and epistemological implications.

2. The strategy for data collection and analysis, and the sample strategies that they adopt.

3. The type of analysis they conduct

How to choose the research articles:

• Articles can be in any social science discipline (sociology, political science, anthropology, social statistics, etc…)

• Articles need to report the results of an empirical research project

• At least ONE article needs to report a qualitative research project

• Articles can be compared because (select one or more criteria):

1. They research the same topic, but with different methodologies (different qualitative methods, or one qualitative and one quantitative)

2. They research different topics, but with similar methodologies

3. They share the same theoretical framework (eg: phenomenology) but with different qualitative (or qual/quant) methodologies

4. They share the same interpretative stance (eg: feminism) but with different qualitative (or qual/quant) methodologies
