Take a moment to think about wages, particularly the wages received for relatively low-skilled occupations.

We understand what the Structural Functionalists would say about these jobs, but what are some of the other reasons for so many jobs in the US economy earning so little pay. Read the article below (it’s from 2019), and provide your impressions.

How does the inclusion of the chosen theoretical orientation contribute to an understanding of the problem being investigated?

This assignment is the first stage of a full research paper.

The study will be about the effects of various aspects of family life on the overall satisfaction of Students in a graduate program.

The problem statement will be something to the effect of “lack of sufficient student satisfaction in graduate programs amongst students with families” ( In other words, because of various family dynamics and responsibilities it is harder on the student and thus the student is less satisfied than those without family responsibilities.)

There are three main sections to the paper.

Section 1: The problem statement, which includes:
What you are studying and why it is important?
A clear statement of the problem to which your study relates?
Characteristics of the problem? (Who is affected, how)
Scope and intensity of the problem? (How many affected? with what impact?)
Its place as a social work concern – historically and now?
Background of the problem within American society?
Discussion of relevant federal and state policies and/or judicial decisions to address the problem, both historic and current?

Section 2: Theoretical Framework, which includes,
Briefly discuss the theoretical/conceptual framework for your study.
What theoretical orientation guides the study?
What rationale justifies the use of this theoretical orientation?
How does the inclusion of the chosen theoretical orientation contribute to an understanding of the problem being investigated?

Section 3: Research Design, which includes,
Briefly identify and justify the type of research design you/we are considering.

Have attached a table which shows some of the variables which will be used in this study down the line to give more of an orientation for where this study is headed. have also attached a finished example of what the basic structure and layout of the assignment should look like.  Delete all sent files after use.

For a 4000-word essay, it is expected that you would have an introduction and conclusion. In your introduction (c. 300 words), briefly explain the focus of your essay, in terms of the concepts, theories, and examples you will be using, and the general thread of your argument. It can also be useful to explain why the essay question is an important question to ask.

In your conclusion (c. 500 words), briefly synthesis what you have discussed (rather than merely repeat it), identify any key conclusions and identify areas for further work e.g. future areas for research and theory, and/or policy and practice.

What was the role of the High Line in the gentrification of West Chelsea? How has the High Line changed the neighborhood overall (think about both positive and negative impact)? Justify your response with reference to the film.

For this assignment, you will watch a film and offer a response:
Film: Class Divide: Effects of Gentrification in West Chelsea, NYC – https://dmacc.kanopy.com/video/class-divide-0 (If you don’t already have a Kanopy account through DMACC, you will have to create an account. Use your DMACC email address. You will be able to access the entire Kanopy library. It also includes popular films, FYI).

After watching the film, answer 4 out of the following 9 questions for this assignment.

1. In Class Divide we learn that since 2009, the average rent for Chelsea apartments rose 10 times faster than for all of Manhattan. What have the implications been?

2. What was the role of the High Line in the gentrification of West Chelsea? How has the High Line changed the neighborhood overall (think about both positive and negative impact)? Justify your response with reference to the film.

3. What are some of the perceptions that Chelsea-Elliott Housing residents have about the Avenues students and vice versa? Do you think those attitudes are fair or unjustified?

4. Why is gentrification emotive and controversial? Justify your response with specific references to the documentary.

5. The filmmaker chooses to interview a number of subjects but puts particular emphasis on interviewing youth from both sides of the ‘divide’. Do you think this is an effective choice? Why or why not?

6. What is the role of real estate agents and developers in gentrification? Make specific references to the documentary e.g. the tactics used to displace old-time residents that NYC councilman Corey Johnson mentions during the protest.

7. What do you think about Yasemin’s 115 steps project? What does dialogue across divides achieve?

8. How is gentrification embedded in race and class relations and social stratification? In the documentary, Hyisheem claims, “It’s not racism, it’s classism.” Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

9. In the documentary, residents of the Elliott-Chelsea Houses express uncertainty about their future in the neighborhood. Danny wonders whether they will give his mother money to move out. Brandon says it is like a big question mark on what’s going to happen next.

The young man sitting on the bench says he feels as if they are already starting to push them out. He says, feel like live under a cloud of darkness surrounded by happiness.” Given what you know about the changing face of Chelsea do you think it is inevitable that these families will get pushed out of the neighborhood? Justify your response.

EX:

In this scholarly journal “How U.S. Policy Has Failed Immigrant Children: Family Separation in the Obama and Trump Eras” by Claudio Perez, he takes a look into the background of both Obama and Trump and their immigration policies. He goes even further to discuss the psychological impact on the families and children who are detained and separated from their parents in harsh conditions, as well discussing ramifications of the criminal law and some solutions. Perez emphasizes the psychological impact that separated families from this Zero Tolerance policy has on these families, they could develop depression anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. A child should not have to experience feeling like a prisoner or an animal at these detention centers and should not be separated from their families for so long or have none to return back to. The effects of the Zero Tolerance Policy have gone way beyond its authority by surpassing the law that keeps those families together and has spent so much more money compared to safer and effective alternative routes that could spare these families of this traumatic experience.
