Discussion: Do Christians have to keep the Law today?
Debate Question: Do Christians have to keep the Law today? Students are assigned differing perspectives on this question based on the first letter of their last names, with A-M defending the proposition “Yes, they do,” In your thread, you should discuss what Paul meant by the term “Law.On the other hand, Paul makes some positive statements about the same Law that seem to conflict with his negative statements. E.g., he writes, “…Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law” (Rom. 3:31); “what shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be!” (7:7); “so then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good” (7:12); “we know that the Law is good” (1 Tim. 1:8).
And added to all these is the problem of the Traditional and the New Perspective’s teaching on the meaning of “Law” in Paul. Whenever Paul talked about the Law, was he referring to “legalistic misuse” of the Law or to the Law’s use as a “Jewish identity marker”?
The issue for this module debate thus is this, “Do Christians today need to be keeping the Law of Moses given to ancient Israelites as seen in the Pentateuchal books?
Who is the audience? What can be said about its ethnic makeup, age, economic situation, gender, social status, and the like? Are the recipients’ circumstances immediately evident? What are the key problems they are facing?
