Did you learn anything from the story that could be applied to your own experience? Talk about the connections you feel to the story.

ENGL 102 3855 Composition and Literature (2215)

In Week 5, you chose a story and identified a theme. Presumably, you noticed this theme because in some way you connected with it.

Maybe you recognize elements of your own life, or those of people you know, or of public figures, in the story’s characters and events. Maybe the theme speaks to your own experience.

Even if the story you chose is fictional and set in another time, place, or universe, a powerful literary work should have elements that we can identify as common to our own realities.

For this question, reflect on the theme you chose last week and try to make these connections.

Does the story remind you of events, people, emotions, or experiences you are familiar with? (You don’t need to write about your own experience if you’re not comfortable doing so; it’s fine to write about people you know, or public figures.)

Did you learn anything from the story that could be applied to your own experience? Talk about the connections you feel to the story.

Complete the SOAPS worksheet before starting the essay.

Length: 800 words (minimum)

Source: One essay from the list above. No other sources may be used – this is a limited analysis. Papers that use other sources will receive a zero. Both in-text citations and a works cited page will be needed. The works cited page will only list the literary work that you analyzed in your essay.use the current 8th edition MLA format when documenting your source.

For this essay, you will analyze the author’s use of rhetoric (rhetorical elements)

What is the author’s purpose for writing the essay? Who is the author’s target audience? Does the author effectively reach that audience? What tone does the author use and is it effective?

What appeals – logical, ethical, emotional – does the author use? In your analysis, you will need to examine how the author achieves his purpose with the target audience.

Other things to consider are: word choice, organization,, use of evidence.

Organization of the essay:

Introduction. Have a hook for the opening of the essay. You may include a brief summary of the article. Identify the title of the literary work and the full name of the author. Place the thesis at the end of the introduction.

Three analysis paragraphs. Each needs a strong topic sentence that identifies the element/aspect of the literary work that you are examining.

Include at least one SHORT direct quote in each analysis paragraph.

In-text documentation is required for all direct quotes used.

Conclusion. Wrap everything up for the reader. Restate the thesis. Work to hold the reader’s attention.

The essay needs to be double spaced. Use MLA style documentation for both in-text citations and the works cited entry. The paper needs to be written in third person.

No more than 10% of the paper may be direct quotes. Select quotes carefully as they should be used to support your ideas rather than pad your paper.

The essay needs to be written in present verb tense.

In your essay you will need to:

clearly identify the title of the literary work and author in the introduction of your analysis

Have a hook that captures the reader’s attention

Have a clear to indicate the focus of your analysis

include at least one short direct quote per body paragraph – this helps to establish a strong connection between your ideas and the work itself

use strong transitions to move the reader from one point to the next.

Before you start the essay take notes over what you have read.

Highlight and annotate the literary work. In an analysis when you highlight and annotate it is the same as gathering information from sources when writing a research paper.

You may consider your ideas valid as long as you can support those ideas with evidence from the literary work.

Your essay should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

The introduction should do the following: Interest the reader with an effective opener

Identify the subject, work, and author (give author’s full name)

Introduce essay’s topic

Define key words, if necessary

The Body should do the following: Have logical organization

Have unity – present one central idea and be coherent.

Provide sufficient information to explain thesis statement

Have paragraphs that are unified, coherent, and adequately developed with details and evidence.

The conclusion should do the following: Summarize the main points

When writing about literature, remember to do the following:

Place quotation marks around the titles of poems, short stories, essays or chapters of a book and italicize the titles of novels or plays.

Use the present tense. For example, when explaining what a narrator says, you would write this: The narrator describes the people gathering for the lottery: “Soon the men began to gather, surveying their own children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes” (233). Notice that the verb describes is in the present tense.

Incorporate quotes into your writing by introducing the quote as did above or by blending the quote into your sentence like this: The men discuss “planting and rain, tractors and taxes” (233).

Document quotes from the literary works by placing the page number from the prose work in and the line number from a poem in . Then write the source cited on a works cited page like this example:

Jackson, Shirley. “The Lottery.” Literature – An Introduction to Reading

and Writing. Ed. Edgar V. Roberts and Henry Jacobs. 5th ed.

Upper Saddle River: Prentice Hall, 1998. 233-238.

Give your essay a title which reflects the content of your essay.

What is the significance of the quilt? What role does it play? Why does it recur in the dialogue? How does the play function as a commentary on men and women, and the divisions between their lives?

Trifles premiered on August 8, 1916 at the Wharf Theater in Province town, MA. This one act play was based on a murder trial that Susan Glaspell covered as a young reporter in Des Moines, Iowa. Using careful timing, Glaspell delivers subtle revelations that draw the audience and the reader into this play. She definitely intended to sting the conscience of her audience and challenge their perceptions of justice and morality, while also focusing on the different experiences that men and women might have to the exact same objective fact or event. The play raises some interesting questions.

Does justice change with perspective? If so, is it possible to handle it fairly?

Since it’s first production in 1916 Trifles has become one of the most anthologized works in American theater history and is frequently cited as one of the great masterpieces of American theater. And It is now rightfully considered a masterpiece of the early feminist movement.

Later in her career, Glaspell also retold this play as the short story A Jury of her Peers.

This is a wonderful play that was once widely known. It shouldn’t linger as a hidden gem, and encourage you to read this play and then share it with your friends.
