How does a group select a particular agent to be its spokes-
person?
How do spokespersons mobilize their constituencies in
key moments such as in direct negotiation with an employer (an
element of what Fligstein [2001b] refers to as “social skill” within
a fi eld)?
How can the group make sure that the spokesperson
authentically represents it and does not abuse the power they have
entrusted him or her with? (In Gramsci’s [1971] terms, this is the
dilemma of ensuring that the leader remains organically linked to
the class.)
What is the source of my problems? Who is at fault? How can they be remedied?
