Case Study Analysis – The Paramount Diner (60%)

The case describes the Paramount: a 44-seat diner in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

The restaurant is a popular favourite among locals and tourists particularly for brunch on weekends, when queues can stretch down the street.

The case study focuses on the restaurant’s unusual seating policy and a recent increase in the popularity of carryout orders.

The purpose of this case study are threefold: firstly, to critically evaluate the Theory of Swift Even Flow and to apply it to a practical situation; secondly, to provide students the opportunity to practice basic process analysis concepts, such as cycle time, throughput time, input rates, output rates, bottlenecks and utilization;; and thirdly, to enable students to consider the interrelationships between the design of an operation and the corresponding behaviours of customers and employees.

The Case Study Analysis is divided into four sections. Students are required to complete:

1. Process Analysis

a) Following the guidelines provided below, conduct a quantitative analysis of the restaurant operation to identify the bottleneck in the process and to calculate how long customers might have to wait to be served.

b) Explain how the unusual seating policy is an operations management tool.

5- Sample article review attached..

Previous feedback on my paper: The task is not to provide a review of the content of the article or of the topic, but to focus on methodology: so what type of approach the author has taken to the research question; in doing so, you are expected to take into considerations the approaches and methodologies discussed in the module.

Description

Write a short essay or journalistic article that could appear in the “op-ed” or business section of a local newspaper. For example, you could write a persuasive op-ed piece for the Chicago Tribune or The Times of Northwest Indiana on some aspect of economic policy or social/cultural interaction

For example, you could write a persuasive op-ed piece for the Chicago Tribune or The Times of Northwest Indiana on some aspect of economic policy or social/cultural interaction (i.e., the need for financial regulation or reform in the United States, technology’s impact on education or finance, the local objectives of healthcare or mental healthcare policy, some issue in professional development or ethics in your own field, etc.).

Similarly, you could rethink the piece as more of a journalistic feature for Crain’s Chicago Business that examines some specifically local economic or commercial issue (i.e., the role of a public university like IUN in the region, issues impacting Northwest Indiana’s economic development, a particular local company’s financial situation, etc.).
