Discuss and evaluate debates about the development and nature of the novel from its beginnings to the present day

Personality is what living beings have. “Character” on the other hand is what people in novels have. The biggest ideological presupposition that novel readers are encouraged to make is to think that characters in novels have personalities.’ Consider the means by which any two novels encourage such a presupposition.

Description

Two novels MUST be the main source of material when answering the question. Daniel Defoe’s ‘Moll Flanders’ and Muriel Spark’s ‘The Prime of Jean Brodie’.

This is a must have. All other sources have been used in the essay as well to make rewriting easier, but more can be used if wanted.

The essay gained only 20 marks out of the needed 40, so an extra 20 is needed for a pass. Here are the learning outcomes for this module:

By the end of the module, you should be able to:

Discuss and evaluate debates about the development and nature of the novel from its beginnings to the present day

Recognise the complexity of the relationship between the formal and thematic concerns of particular novels and their historical contexts

Show understanding of how individual novelists employ specific techniques in order to serve their particular narrative strategies

Compare how different novelists have used the novel to address recurrent thematic concerns and exploited the possibilities of the form in different ways.

Discuss the music and make connections: Explain how your musical choice reflects the idea of “perseverance in the face of adversity” (in other words, what features of your musical choice bring that idea to mind), OR how does your musical choice help you deal with adversity?

How Musicians Define Perserverance

Before completing your response post, do the following:

Listen to the podcast, including the Bagatelle by Beethoven: “Open Ears Project podcast Episode #24: Terrance McKnight

on Overcoming Adversity” : https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/open-ears-project/episodes/terrance-mcknight-on-overcoming-adversity

Read Langston Hughes’ poem: “Life is Fine”: https://poets.org/poem/life-fine

Your task is to consider the music from McKnight’s point of view (in other words, his personal Expressive Listening experience) and consider how Beethoven’s Bagatelle demonstrates the quality of perseverance.

In what ways can the music suggest the idea of “perseverance in the face of adversity”, as Terrance McKnight claims?

>>Be specific. Identify particular features of the music and how it communicates that idea.

How does the music reflect the ideas that are presented in Hughes’ poem? Make connections between features of the music and specific details in the poem; quote words or phrases from the poem and explain how they relate to the idea of “perseverance in the face of adversity” that McKnight identifies in Beethoven’s Bagatelle.

Present your own musical choice: Choose a musical work that you think reflects the idea of “perseverance in the face of adversity”.

Identify the work (title and artist) and provide a URL link (if possible) so that your readers can hear it.

Discuss the music and make connections: Explain how your musical choice reflects the idea of “perseverance in the face of adversity” (in other words, what features of your musical choice bring that idea to mind), OR how does your musical choice help you deal with adversity?

Critically evaluate the issues identified that may impact on consumers, patients or other stakeholders in this setting supported by relevant literature.
