a.) Review the first word of the outcome, which is an action verb

b.) Look at a Bloom’s list of action verbs and determine where the action verb falls

Step Three: Consider an example of your specific learning that falls within the same level of learning

a.) Use an action verb at the same level of learning as the outcome to create your Learning Statement

Step Four: Repeat the process for the same outcome so that there are two or three Learning Statements per outcome

Step Five: Begin the process again for each outcome.

Helpful Exercise:

Formula for crafting strong learning statements: Verb + What they do (behavior) + Why they do it Try this exercise below as you address each outcome. Ask yourself: They learned how to “INSERT OUTCOME” by _______________ and _________________ and ___________________. As you answer the question, use the learning to draft your learning statements. Be specific with your answers to the question and then go to Blooms and make sure that you use an action verb at the corresponding level.

Explain the assignment requirements to potential interviewees before conducting the interview giving an example question. Remember to be sensitive to your interviewee as some discussions may elicit painful or strong emotions.

INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
In order to be an effective counselor, we must learn how to have meaningful interactions with individuals and be able to hear and discuss any topic.

The art of listening is imperative, and this assignment gives you the opportunity to intently listen to another individual, digest information that may be sensitive, interpret non-verbal communication, mood, etc. You also have the opportunity to reflect with the individual and ask more questions that may naturally arise.

The interview is practice for you not to impose your own opinions or judgements prematurely but maintain an unbiased, subjective point of view listening, and asking clarifying questions while applying insights and prior learning.

INSTRUCTIONS

Conduct an interview (this is NOT a counseling session) of at least 10 questions with ONE person/couple that currently classifies themselves as the following:

● Married
● Separated
● Divorced
● Divorced and Remarried
● Licensed Marriage & Family Counselor

You may also observe Family Court answering at least 10 questions via observation.

When formulating questions, think of information that may be beneficial to know as a counselor working with individuals in a marriage and family session.

The questions must be open-ended considering implications such as the role of religion, cultural influences, environment, family of origin, finances, children, etc.

You may use information from our texts/videos to help you formulate questions (remember to cite/reference information using current APA format when needed).

Explain the assignment requirements to potential interviewees before conducting the interview giving an example question. Remember to be sensitive to your interviewee as some discussions may elicit painful or strong emotions.

The body of the paper must be 3-5 pages and contain a general summary of the interview along with your personal reaction/what you’ve learned.

● First 2-4 pages- Include an introduction of the person interviewed (marital status, occupation, education, etc.) with permission of the interviewee. This portion should be no longer than half a page and does not count as part of your 10 questions.

The bulk of your paper will highlight key points of the interview. Ensure that your paper is not merely a list of answers, but a well thought out, organized summary of your interview.

After your summary, conclude by reflecting upon and analyzing the interviewee’s statements/experiences to identify a common theme within the interview (i.e. loss, miscommunication, loneliness, perseverance, faith, etc.) explaining how and why you chose this theme. Include Biblical support.

● Reaction Page-The last, FULL page of your paper will consist of your reaction to the interview including what you deem as beneficial information as a counselor, what you learned through this process, and how faith has an impact on your reaction.

The full transcript of the interview (questions and answers) must be TYPED as an appendix to the paper.

Proper current APA format must be followed; however, a Title Page and Reference Page are not required for this assignment.

Why does Joseph Boyden use two narrators to tell the story of Three Day Road? What effects does he create by interweaving Niska’s and Xavier’s narratives?

Why does Joseph Boyden use two narrators to tell the story of Three Day Road? What effects
does he create by interweaving Niska’s and Xavier’s narratives?

2. Niska tells Xavier about the stories her father told her family. “Sometimes his stories were all
that we had to keep us alive” (p. 35). What role do stories play within the novel?

3. Why does Niska spend so much time telling Xavier stories of the past? Why does she say that
she “feeds” him stories? What effect do her stories have on him?

4. Early in the novel, Thompson asks Elijah if he likes combat and killing, to which Elijah
responds, “It’s in my blood.” But Thompson doesn’t ask Xavier, who thinks, “Does he sense
something? How am I different?” (p. 75).

How is Xavier different from Elijah? How do they
each feel about combat and killing? In what ways are they alike?

5. Elijah has a dream in which three of his dead fellow soldiers tell him: “Do what you can.
There is nothing sacred any more in a place such as this. Don’t fight it.

Do what you can” (p.
282). How does Elijah interpret this? Are these spirits right in suggesting that in war nothing
is sacred and that a soldier should do whatever he can—even if it involves killing innocent
people—to survive and win?

6. In what ways is it significant that Xavier and Elijah are Cree? How do their fellow soldiers
perceive them? What aspects of their traditional ways of life affect how they perform during
the war?

7. How does Niska begin to cure Xavier of his despair and morphine addiction? What does this
cure suggest about the difference between Native Canadian and Western views of medicine
and healing?

8. Niska has the gift of receiving visions. What do her visions reveal to her? How do they guide
her?

9. What does the novel as a whole say about war and what it can do to those who must kill in
war? How are Elijah and Xavier changed, physically and spiritually, by their experiences in
war?

10. In what ways is Three Day Road relevant to our own time and circumstance?

For this essay, you will analyze the author’s use of rhetoric (rhetorical elements)

What is the author’s purpose for writing the essay? Who is the author’s target audience? Does the author effectively reach that audience? What tone does the author use and is it effective?

What appeals – logical, ethical, emotional – does the author use? In your analysis, you will need to examine how the author achieves his purpose with the target audience.

Other things to consider are: word choice, organization,, use of evidence.

Organization of the essay:

Introduction. Have a hook for the opening of the essay. You may include a brief summary of the article. Identify the title of the literary work and the full name of the author. Place the thesis at the end of the introduction.

Three analysis paragraphs. Each needs a strong topic sentence that identifies the element/aspect of the literary work that you are examining.

Conclusion. Wrap everything up for the reader. Restate the thesis. Work to hold the reader’s attention.

The essay needs to be double spaced. Use MLA style documentation for both in-text citations and the works cited entry. The paper needs to be written in third person.
