You are required to write an essay structured to respond to the guides that accompany the provided case-studies.

You will use as basis of knowledge and understanding, the provided case-study to explore and critically analyse how globalisation process and global change impact on emergence, spread, and control of either tuberculosis (TB) or type-2 diabetes.

The essay requires you to demonstrate the ability to interpret and critique rather than merely describe the issues highlighted in the optional case-studies.

OPTION 1: A Global Health Perspective in Fighting Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is already one of the commonest non-communicable diseases (consequence of malnutrition) whose emergence, control and management are influenced by globalization:

Critically analyse how globalisation has contributed to the increased burden of type-2 diabetes across the world, and set out the challenges facing global and public health agencies in their response to type-2 diabetes.

Guidance to doing the Essay

Through analysing and interpreting the issues highlighted in the case-study on fighting type-2 diabetes in China, use the following guidance to structure a 4,000 word essay in response to the task described in Option 1.

1. Identify and describe FOUR globalization factors and explore to clarify how EACH factor influences global emergence and prevalence of type-2 diabetes [1,500 words].

2. Identify and describe the role of FOUR categories of agencies involved in activities for the prevention, control and management of type-2 diabetes [800 words].

3. For each of the FOUR categories, identify and examine the challenges facing specific agencies in performing their role more effectively to reduce the global burden of type-2 diabetes [1,500 words].

4. Draw your conclusions about (i) globalization and diabetes prevalence, and (ii) issues on global efforts to fighting type-2 diabetes [200 words].

Effective essays will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the connections between complex globalisation processes and malnutrition leading to type-2 diabetes globally. You therefore need to critically analyse the meaning of globalisation and clarify how its process influence type-2 diabetes (the result of malnutrition and inequalities).

Effective essays will illustrate the discussion with one or two examples of recent topical issues in controlling and management of type-2 diabetes, and analyse critically the extent to which globalisation contribute to the problems.

You also need to think about global public health systems arrangements to control type-2 diabetes crisis and discuss the challenges this brings for global partnerships and governance.
