Competencies are there to help Nurse Practitioners to practice at an evolved level. This week we will reflect on the competencies required to be an APN.

Transitioning from the professional nursing role (RN) to advanced practice nursing role (Nurse practitioner) requires learners to intentionally reflect on what they know and what they need to know. Becoming familiar with the expected core competencies will help you understand the practice behavior expectations. In this week’s reflection discussion, choose at least 1 core competencies from the APN( nurse practitioners) role.

Interview an APN about their roles, transition, and the role development phases that they have experienced. Identify their current role in the organization that they work for. Ask for specific descriptions of specific situations at different points in their practice. For example, discuss a problem when they first began practicing in an APN role, another at six months, another at one year, and so on. Compare these descriptions with the role development phases described in the chapter (Novice to Expert).

Describe how you function using the APN core competencies: direct care, consultation, collaboration, research skills, clinical and professional leadership, expert coaching and advice (teaching), and ethical decision­ making.

Describe how you use conflict management.

Describe how you use cultural competency within their practice. What are your greatest challenges?

What are some legal or ethical issues confronting you?

Create a 15-slide (max) presentation describing your interview including highlights from your conversation. Include your interviewee’s personal history, current practice, APN role competencies, and professional issues.
