Reader response exercise

The purpose of this exercise is to practice a tool for overcoming writer’s block and developing ideas for essays.

Here are the details:

Find an article that sparks a reaction in you. This reaction can be agreement, disagreement, anger, fear, happiness, etc. Any reaction is fine. Your reaction might be the notion that you want to respond or say something to the author of the article.

It does not matter what article you choose. It can be anything. It can be in print, or it can be online. It also does not matter if the article is recent or old. The main thing is just that you react to the article. After finding the article, you will read it.

After reading the article, you will write this exercise. This exercise is made up of three parts.

First, you will write a paragraph where you give the title of the article, the name of the magazine it appears in and the author. Then in that first paragraph, you will briefly summarize this article. That is, you will briefly tell what the article is about.

Write at least one paragraph sharing your reaction. At this point, do not be concerned with the organization. This is not a formal essay (that will come later); this is just an exercise to generate ideas.

Your reaction can be whatever you like. Just whatever thoughts are flowing out of your mind as you are thinking about the article, write those down. The thought process of this part of the exercise relates to the tools and ideas presented in the Ideas for Essays Lecture Notes in Unit 2.

This second part of the exercise where you share your reaction should be one to two paragraphs long.

Finally, after you write one or two paragraphs sharing your reaction, write a paragraph where you discuss possible essay topics that you see coming out of your reaction.

Analysis and Application: Procedures in a Criminal Trial

The following case study presents issues related to procedures in a criminal trial and the roles of the major participants.

Case Study:

Jones, Walsh, and Bert have been arrested on suspicion of rape and criminal assault of a 14-year-old girl. As the police investigation unfolds they locate and obtain the statement of Bland, who provides them additional information about Walsh.

The evidence the police uncover reveals that there have been three separate assault and rapes of juveniles over a 3-day period.

The prosecutor in the case files charges against Jones, Walsh, and Bert for their acts. Bert hires an attorney to defend him. Bert tells his defense attorney that he did not commit any of the rapes and that he was only present one time with Jones and all he did was hit one of the girls.

Bert explains that he can prove this because at the times the other rapes are alleged to have occurred, he was with Mook. Mook is currently out of the country on a mountain climbing trip and will not return for 2 months.

Shortly after the prosecutor files charges in the case, Bland contacts the prosecutor’s office and provides a written statement to the prosecutor that Walsh was not present during any of the rapes.

In a 2-page paper (excluding the title page and reference page), discuss the following questions, explaining your answers in detail by analyzing the facts presented and other factors you consider relevant; defining and explaining key legal terms and principles; and citing legal authority (your text and other legal authority) to support your conclusions.

Journal Article Analysis (JAA) is an educational tool that uses current (within the past five years) journal articles to further understand a particular topic’s dynamics. Directions:

1. Locate a minimum of two peer-reviewed journal articles on the same topic based on the weekly module (e.g., history of corrections, penal sanctions, community-based corrections, correctional practices, etc.)

Consider how much they know about your topic and what they need to know to understand your purpose. Will you need to explain complex terminology? Will graphs help your audience?

Begin by looking at the research question(s) which triggered this thesis statement. Then explain your purpose (passing the course is not the purpose here). Your statement is a good place to start, but you need to go a bit further. Are you trying to inform, entertain, persuade, or do something else?

Consider the “audience take-away.” What do you want your readers to know, feel, or believe when they finish reading your research paper? A clear understanding of your purpose will help you decide what information to include in your paper and how to organize your paper.

Next, consider your audience; in this case, your audience is your classmates. Consider how much they know about your topic and what they need to know to understand your purpose. Will you need to explain complex terminology? Will graphs help your audience? If your topic is a controversial one, think about the best way to present it to your audience. For example, think about your tone and word choice here.

Once you have an understanding of your purpose and audience, consider your subject.

How much information do you already know about the topic? What information do you need to research and present to your audience in order to fulfill your purpose? Careful consideration here will help direct your research.
