Educating in health and social care

Activity A: Induction:

Write an account of where you work and how a learner is inducted into your placement area. Include the learning opportunities you can identify for them. (500 words maximum)

What kind of placement do you work in?

What learners do you get? (Profession? Year of student programme?)

How do you welcome and induct them on their first day?

What learning opportunities are there for learners? (Give up to five examples.)

Who else might the learner work with (roles in your professional team and senior / expert staff)?

How do you ensure that the learner is settled in and that learning is taking place?

Have been working as a scrub nurse at the  for many years now and i have the opportunity and luck to work with many student nurses and ODP’s from different universities that we accommodate them for their practical placement.

Usually we take about 6 students in theatres for their placement and each mentor has one student to teach, help and support during their time in our department. Also we have newly qualified staff nurses and ODP’s that we have to teach them their new role in theatres as scrub and circulating.

Am actively involved in mentoring these students and new staff and i have received very positive feedback from the departmental practice educator, the university link tutor and of course the students themselves.

In our hospital we welcome both students and new staff with a orientation booklet that has all the key contact details, dress code, shifts, the specialties covered by the hospital and the emergency numbers .Also in the booklet the students/new starters will find the trainings that we offer and they have to participate.

As part of our theatre team they will work near the consultants anaesthetists and surgeons, registrars ,medical students, health care assistants and with the TSSU department.

At the end of their placement the students will achieved outcomes such as how to participate in the team-work involved in the peri-operative care of patients ,be able to assist the anaesthetic team as appropriate, understand and maintain the concept of the sterile field, explain the procedures to minimise the risk of infection, describe some surgical procedures and understand the anatomical structures involved, identify the risks for patients recovering from anaesthetic. etc.

Personally, welcome the students with joy , try to make them feel comfortable and have a conversation about things that they like or worried about . will show them the department  will describe our job role as scrub nurses, also try to build a trust between us and make them feel pleasant with me as their mentor.

will tell them that we will have three briefing meetings, the first is the induction and how we will work together as team ,second in the middle of their placement to see how much progress we have done so far and discuss any changes or if they need more support from me, and the last will be their assessment and how well they have learn their role.

In the first meeting i will try to make them understand that am there for them always to help , support and successfully gain their goals. Additionally , show them that they can approach me for anything that they need and will make an effort to teach them as much as i can about our scrub role in theatres so they can be ready for the future if they will choose that path as nurses. Also ,we will set the goals that we have to complete by the end of their placement and what they have to learn according to their progress book from their university and by me as their mentor.
