Evidence-Based Interventions Used in Trauma

Description

To prepare: Read the DSM-5 section on trauma and stressor-related disorders and review the Learning Resources on PTSD, disaster response, and trauma.

Then search the literature for studies related to an evidence-based intervention used to treat those suffering from trauma and stressor-related issues. Specifically, locate the following:

One study on treating symptoms resulting from a national traumatic event (e.g., natural disaster, mass shooting)

One study on treating symptoms resulting from an interpersonal trauma (e.g., rape, childhood sexual molestation, domestic violence)

Assignment: Post the APA references for the two studies you located.

Provide a brief description of the traumatic events, including a summary of how they affected the individuals involved.

Describe the interventions discussed in the articles and explain how they addressed the psychosocial issues and needs of the individuals affected by the trauma.

Explain the effectiveness of the interventions, as stated in the articles.

Analyze and discuss the similarities and differences in the individuals’ needs depending on whether the issues occurred due to a national traumatic event or an interpersonal trauma.

Compose a brief summary that must at least include the purpose of the article, the population studied, the type of treatment used, results, the author’s conclusion, and a reflection as to how this information may inform your practice. 

Trauma focused therapy

For this module, you read about trauma focused therapy in your Wheeler text.

Given the recent pandemic and its’ sequelae,  suspect that we might be hearing and learning more about trauma informed care in this context. For this discussion board assignment,  search the literature to find one article that concerns psychotherapy (or a psychosocial intervention) and trauma. Although we have psychotherapies that are trauma-specific, such as CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) and EMDR, you can choose any type of psychosocial intervention that interests you (such as yoga and PTSD, for example).

Consider all of the different theoretical orientations we have studied to date, or even ones we didn’t get a chance to learn about yet in Corey, such as Post-Modern, Feminism, and Transactional Analysis, etc.)- you may find some interesting studies. There is a lot of information on PubMed, but you may consider doing a search within our virtual library under Psychology (as opposed to Nursing & Medicine).

The trauma does not have to be in the context of COVID and you can choose any type of article you like provided that it is scholarly.

post a PDF of the article and compose a brief summary that must at least include the purpose of the article, the population studied, the type of treatment used, results, the author’s conclusion, and a reflection as to how this information may inform your practice.

Trauma treatment

You are to present a comprehensive brief assessment and in-depth treatment plan of a client that is diagnosed with a trauma disorder (such as PTSD, Complex PTSD, Developmental Trauma Disorder, or is a survivor of intergenerational or relational trauma) as follows:

-First, describe your client briefly and the presenting issue.

-Then, choose a treatment model (examples: CBT,  TF-CBT,  DBT,  Exposure Therapy,  Somatic Experiencing, IFS, Psychodrama, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, a psychoanalytic approach or another model approved by the professor) and give a brief overview of it.

-Explain your client’s trauma issues (thoughts, behaviors, internal dynamics) through the theoretical framework of your chosen treatment modality. (Example: If you chose CBT, it is based on several theories. How would these theories explain your client’s functioning?)

-Choose specific interventions from your chosen treatment model and explain how you would apply them to your client. Be thorough and in depth.

-Explain in-depth why you think these interventions would be successful with your particular client and why they might not be successful.

-Explain what you learned from this paper.
