Advanced Solid Waste Management

Textbook:
Worrell, W. A., Vesilind, P. A., & Ludwig, C. (2017). Solid waste engineering: A global perspective (3rd ed.). Cengage Learning. https://online.vitalsource.com/#/books/9781305888357

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

Assess the political environment as it relates to solid waste and solid waste management.
Summarize laws and standards related to solid waste management.

Instructions:

The siting of a landfill is always contentious in a community due to operational issues with traffic and odors, and if you live close to the landfill you may deal with a decline in property values. Landfills will eventually generate leachate that can adversely impact the environment if the liner is breached, bringing toxicity to vegetation and contamination to groundwater. Having a properly operating landfill can minimize many of these impacts to citizens and to the environment. This assignment will further explore these topics.

Answer the questions directly on this document. The specified word count is given for each question. At a minimum use textbook as a resource for these questions. Other sources may be used as needed. All material from outside sources (including your textbook) must be cited and referenced in 7th Edition APA format. include a reference list after each question.

1) A community generates 225 tons of municipal solid waste per year.

a. What is the actual average annual production of methane that a community should expect from the landfill operation in BTU per year? (For Part A, show all of your work.)

b. What are the factors, laws, or standards that can limit the amount of methane production in the landfill? (Your total response for Part B should be at least 200 words.)

2) Use the treatment options in Table 8-11 (p. 357) that list biological and physical/chemical operations for treating leachate generated from a landfill to answer the following questions. (Your total responsibility for all parts of this question should be at least 300 words.)

a. Recommend a treatment train that uses one biological and one physical-chemical operation. Provide your reason for making this recommendation.

b. In what order would you put these units? Describe your reasoning for your prescribed order.

c. If your proposed treatment scheme does not meet the prescribed permit discharge limits for the facility, what post-treatment technology would you recommend ensuring that discharge limits are met. Provide your reasons for your technology selection.

d. For each part of the question, be sure to explain what law and standards factor into your recommendation or reasoning.

3) Leachate and Groundwater Monitoring

a. Why are landfills designed to have a leachate head of 12 inches on the liner? If the leachate head had the potential to build to 24 inches, what is a simple design technique that could relieve the hydraulic pressure on the liner?

b. What are the monitoring requirements for an operational landfill? Create a table to describe what each parameter measures and why knowing this is important.

c. What are the post-closure monitoring requirements? Create a table to describe what each parameter measures and why knowing this is important? (Your total responsibility for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

4) Assume that a landfill is proposed for a location that is located east of a forest, west of a national park, and north of a major river.

a. What are some political factors that go into deciding if this is an acceptable location for a new regional landfill?

b. What engineering modifications could you recommend that would make this site acceptable to the city council?

c. If the landfill location is rejected, what recommendations would you propose for managing the municipal solid waste for the community? (Your total responsibility for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

What surprised you about your river of reading (and how it was similar different to those of your peers)? What does the river of reading demonstrate about literacy as a social practice?

Cultural, critical and operational dimensions, analysing how engagement with text was key in three instances in my life

Title: Reflecting on My Reading Experiences: Cultural, Critical and Operational Dimensions

The essay should be written in first person and should consist of a discussion of three instances in your life where engagement with a text was key (focus on reading).

We have provided a downloadable essay planner on Moodle to support you to structure your essay effectively and help you to ensure that you meet the assessment criteria.

Guidance about the structure of the essay can also be found below:

Part of Essay Content
Introduction Briefly introduce the purpose and aims of the essay. Explain why literacy can be perceived as a ‘social practice’ drawing on theory and your own experiences of reading.

You should include a definition of literacies drawing on your reading of the course. Use this theory to support an academic discussion of your river of reading.

What surprised you about your river of reading (and how it was similar different to those of your peers)? What does the river of reading demonstrate about literacy as a social practice?

Top Tip: Refer to the statements from seminar 1 and seminar 2. These explain that viewing literacy as a social practice means we understand that:

Literacy is not just a set of skills
The social context affects how you read and understand a text
Cultural backgrounds and experiences are integral to the meaning making process
Literacies are diverse and linked to peoples identities
Texts can mean different things to different people
Literacy practices shape the world around us
Literacy practices are not neutral and are rooted in the power relations in society

You will not have space to cover all of these points but you can use these to guide your analysis. Make your point, discuss an illustrative example from your River of Reading (or make comparisons with those of your peers) and link to theory from one of the key readings.

In this section you are demonstrating your understanding of literacy as a social practice.

Cultural Dimensions of Reading In each of these three sections reference theory to help you to define and explain the dimension of reading you are focusing on. In each section refer directly to your appendix and briefly explain the reasons for depicting the reading experience as you did.
Remember to:

1) Introduce the dimension of literacy you are discussing and define it clearly (drawing on Green’s theory).

2) Introduce the reading experience you have chosen to exemplify the dimension of literacy you are discussing (drawing on relevant theory). Explain relevant detail such as when the event took place, where you were, who you were with, what you were reading, why you were reading.

3) Why did you select this reading experience to represent your engagement with ‘cultural/operational/critical dimension of reading? This needs to link directly to the definition of the dimension (The operational dimension is about skills, the cultural dimension is about meaning making and the critical dimension is about power relations/representation)

4) Make link to your collage pages in your appendix. Why did you include the images/words/artefacts in the appendix. Pull out details in the collage, discussing their relevance to the point you wish to make.

5) Use the theory from the key readings (or other relevant readings) to help you discuss why this is an interesting and significant example in relation to the dimension you are discussing. (THIS IS YOUR MAIN POINT)

Operational Dimensions of Reading
Critical Dimensions of Reading
Conclusion This is the section where you link your academic discussion of the three dimensions of reading to your future practice as a primary school teacher.

Reflect on what you have you learnt about literacy during the module so far and consider the significance of this to your role as an educator of children.

Engage with theory in this section to highlight how and why reflecting on your own reading practices in this way useful when considering your professional role as a teacher. In this section you need to meet the criteria related to the ethical implications of viewing literacy as a social practice.

EXTRA NOTES:

My three personal instances where engagement with a text was key:

1. When  was learning to read,  would sit and practice reading with my dad every evening.
2. During my GCSE English Exams where  would have to read and analyse books for my exams.
3. Teaching my niece how to read, and passing on the skills was taught my parents and teachers.
